Blu-ray

Gran Torino (BD, Warner, Region ABC, USA)

Clint Eastwood's last ever acting role, apparently. After the terrific Changeling, I can't wait to see the man's return to quasi-Dirty Harry territory.

It's a fantastic movie, and I can't help but draw certain comparisons between it and Unforgiven.

Hopefully the BD is good. Haven't looked up anything about it yet. I usually hope that Robert Harris does a quick write-up, or that I can find screencaps on here or AVS Forum. I can't understand why Blu-ray.com or DVDBeaver offer compressed images, 'cos then there's no way to get an accurate representation of what the picture quality looks like 'cos they're blurry and lacking detail.

The DVD Beaver and Blu-ray.com images are usually fine from the point of view of detail, but the fact that they're compressed so heavily means that it's sometimes difficult to gauge that quality of the encoding or grain reproduction. CinemaSquid, Hundland.org and of course Xylon over at the AV Science Forum are generally more reliable in that regard.

Yeah, my main complaint is just how fuzzy Blu-ray.com and DVDBeaver caps are. It becomes difficult to tell, like you said, how good the grain reproduction is.

I haven't seen CinemaSquid before. That one's definitely bookmarked.

I want to watch this. I've already posted my thoughts on Changeling but I've heard from many people this is the better of the two.

Just watched it. It's good, but not a patch on Changeling in my opinion, and in the shadow of Million Dollar Baby too. More thoughts tomorrow, hopefully.

Way better than the phony Oscar-bait by Mr. Hackis. Erm, IMO. :)

But as someone said, it's "an interesting a riff on his snarling tough guy image [much] as UNFORGIVEN was on his Western persona."
