Blu-ray

True Blood: The Complete First Season (BD, HBO, Region ABC, USA)

I've heard mucho great things about this vampiric drama series from Alan Ball, the brains behind American Beauty, Six Feet Under and Revolutionary Road.

Updated Sunday, June 21, 2009 at 11:26 PM: Well, slap my face! It turns out Alan Ball had nothing to do with Revolutionary Road after all. Cheers, Erik.

Speaking of nitpicking, Alan Ball had nothing to do with ROAD, that was Sam Mendes, director of AMERICAN BEAUTY. Ball did direct the (digitally shot ;) film TOWELHEAD, though, which is pretty darn good.

Well, I'll tell you one thing for certain: the picture quality is excellent. I just popped Disc 1 in a few minutes ago to take a peek, and was very impressed by how detailed and natural the image looked. Given that my only prior experience of a TV show on BD was the unrelentingly cheap-looking Weeds, this is a fucking revelation.

When you've watched the season, you should listen to the episode 1 commentary, Ball is in top-form speaking about the "look" of the show, his intentions, down to the way the vampires' teeth should come out. Anyway, hope you'll like the show as much as the PQ, as they say...

For my money, one of the best shows on TV at the moment.

Honey1 at AVS claims the series has lots of edge enhancement on Blu Ray.

Is this true or does Honey1 need to lower their sharpness settings on their projector ?

You might pop in there and mention you didn't see edge enhancement.

Oh and for a great Blu Ray television series try Lost. I have season 4 which bar a couple of minor instances of edge enhancement on two episodes it looks fabulous.

Hmm... well, I think I'll hold off on commenting until I've seen more than the first five minutes of the first episode, but I certainly didn't notice any EE during that brief sampling.
