Wow, what the hell is Franklyn? Judging on the basis of the cover, it at looks pretty interesting.

Yeah, I thought so too. The synopses make it sound a bit like Neil Gaiman meets Philip Pullman meets V for Vendetta:

"The film is a split narrative set simultaneously in contemporary London and in a future metropolis ruled by religious fervor. It's the story of four lost souls, divided by two parallel worlds, on course for an explosive collision when a single bullet will decide all their fates."

"Preest is a masked vigilante detective, searching for his nemesis on the streets of Meanwhile City, a monolithic fantasy metropolis ruthlessly governed by faith and religious fervor. Esser is a broken man, searching for his wayward son amongst the rough streets of London's homeless. Milo is a heartbroken thirty-something desperately trying to find a way back to the purity of first love. Emilia is a beautiful art student; her suicidal art projects are becoming increasingly more complex and deadly."

I must confess that two things attracted me to it: (1) the inclusion of Eva Green, who is an arresting presence in every film she appears in, and (2) the fact that, somewhat unusually, we are presented with an atheist hero battling a sinister religious establishment. I understand that it's a little less clear-cut than that, but at the very least it seems to be slightly off the beaten track.

Some more info...

I'm with you on reason number 2. The bold step of making it an atheist hero against a religious establishment definitely makes it all that more appealing, no matter what degree the assault on religion is. Eva Green and I haven't crossed paths yet, but I will be keeping an eye on her performance whenever I get a chance to see this movie.

I've seen Franklyn at the BIFFF last April, and, despite some flaws, it was overall a very nice surprise. Does the Blu-ray have subtitles?

Holden:

It does, yes, in English. It also has a very, very nice transfer.
