The New York Ripper announced for BD

Well, I can't say I saw this coming. As per Blu-ray.com, Blue Underground has just announced that Lucio Fulci's the notorious The New York Ripper, the giallo so heinous that its prints were supposedly ejected from the British Isles under police escort, will be getting a BD release in the US on September 29th.

The New York Ripper was previously released by Blue Underground on DVD back on April 29, 2008. Given that it, like a number of the European popular cinema titles they have put out, was a straightforward port of an earlier release by Anchor Bay (dating back to 1999), the master is almost certain to have been standard definition. This suggests, that, as with Blue Underground's recent release of the Dario Argento/George A. Romero collaboration Two Evil Eyes, a new HD master has been created - an opportunity, hopefully, for them to correct the gaffe present in the previous master, whereby a shot from the middle of the film was misplaced at the end.

It looks as if we're due some new extras as well:

  • "I'm an Actress!" - Interview with Zora Kerova
  • NYC Locations Then and Now
  • Theatrical Trailer

Personally, I can't wait. 1080p nipple-slicing? That's got to be some sort of perverse delicacy. I'm just disappointed that, by the looks of it, Blue Underground have once again remixed the sound into 7.1 and failed to provide the original mono version.

I hope they do fix the scene.
I will definitely buy this, but now the question is do I hang onto my AWE DVD?

Finally watched Two Evil Eyes tonight. Wonderful movie--first time seeing it. Argento's segment is very much stylized and fascinating, but I gotta say I prefer Romero's for the creepy factor.

Fantastic HD presentation. Blue Underground are impressing me more and more. The fact they're not including original mixes still bothers me, but they're hitting home runs in the visual department.

Haven't seen The New York Ripper, but I'll likely get it anyway.

Any opinion on Dead & Buried? Considering giving that one a purchase. Very much looking to (continually) increase my horror Blu-ray collection. Just such a shame I own The Thing on BD... Looks like an SD upconvert but with the grain sucked out. It's a crime, since it's my favorite horror movie.

I hope this release will be the complete version, most had a couple of shots missing/misplaced, but this is indeed really great news. Fingers crossed they don't screw this one up.

@ #4:

It seems to work, but it's displaying your email URL rather than an actual name. I can change that for you if you like - what would you prefer to be known as?

Michael, please can you change it just to Avanze. I didn't know it was showing my e-mail of all things. Thanks.

I've just checked, and it doesn't look like there's any way of me changing it at my end. It appears to be something that you have to do yourself, although how you go about doing that is a mystery to me. (Perhaps something to do with the display name in your display name in your Yahoo account? Try http://openid.yahoo.com - I'm not sure.)

It's not your email that's being displayed, just a long URL with a string of letters and numbers that takes you to a login page on the Yahoo site.

Ah, I think the only customisation allowed is a change of url, something like me.yahoo.com/atwhatever as an identifier. For now I might go back to the normal way of adding comments, avanze, is already taken. I thought OpenID would have more options.

The main benefit of OpenID is basically that the site authenticates you, meaning that you don't have to worry about your posts accidentally being flagged as spam. By all means just post the old way - I allow anonymous and unauthenticated commenters, or at least I am for the time being. (If spam ever becomes an issue, I may have to change my policy.)

Does anyone know if the one scene being out of order was a gaffe on the 35mm print AB/BU had to work with from the start? Or was it Anchor Bay (or whoever was responsible for the print) who screwed it up during the restoration itself? Going by Michael's screencaps the US/French DVDs seem to be from a longer, but lower quality print than the Australian/Netherlands print, so it wouldn't surprise me if the mistake was there on the master they worked from the whole time.

For that matter, do any prior English video releases have this scene in its' proper order? (Or at all?) If not, I'd be sympathetic to Bill Lustig and company. If so... well, then that'd just be poor QC on their part.

I've heard mixed things about this title for years, but never much wanted to buy a "close but no cigar" edition on DVD. I guess I just may as well wait for this release; even if it isn't quite uncut, it's sure to be the nicest looking transfer the film has for some time.
