Toy Story 3 trailer online

Pixar's latest movie, Up, opened on Friday in the US, fresh from making waves at the Cannes Film Festival. Predictably, it will be some time before it ends up on UK shores... October, apparently. How Disney can justify this sort of lateness in the year 2009 is anyone's guess.

While seething about how long I'll have to wait to see a legitimate presentation of the film, I decided to sooth myself by watching the teaser trailer to Toy Story 3, which debuted at the beginning of 3D screenings of Up and is now available online (apparently, those viewing traditional 2D screenings got The Princess and the Frog instead). This third instalment in the adventures of Woody, Buzz and co. gets its theatrical release on June 18, 2010... so yeah, more waiting. In any event, as tends to be the standard with Pixar teasers, it consists of a skit that won't end up in the actual film, so it doesn't really reveal a great deal. It's pretty fun to watch, though, and I must admit that in spite of my misgivings about a third Toy Story, and one not directed by John Lasseter at that, I couldn't help getting a little bit giddy over seeing those characters once again. Part of me thinks that Pixar, with their unblemished track record, are long overdue a dud, but who am I kidding? They haven't let me down so far and I'm not about to start doubting them yet. Roll on July 2010!

Toy Story 3

(Or, more likely, somewhere in the realm of October/November 2010 for the UK release...)

So is it just me or does this movie sound like a rehash of The Brave Little Toaster (forgotten playthings following their grown-up owner to college)? I find that kinda interesting because Toaster's production team was made up of a lot of people who wound up at Pixar...and would that perhaps make this Pixar's first remake?

Eh, probably should wait until TS3 comes out first, I know...

I definitely see the similarities, bearing in mind that we still don't really know a hell of a lot about the new film's storyline. It's certainly within the realms of possibility given that The Brave Little Toaster was a pet project of Lasseter and the late Joe Ranft. It also bears striking similarities to the earliest outline for the original Toy Story, included in the OOP Ultimate Toy Box set and I believe the more recent 10th anniversary DVD.

It is a treat to watch. In the short amount of time, it nails down all of the shticks of the toys. When it comes to computer animation, nobody can beat Pixar. I remember when Disney had a bout of temporary insanity and cut Pixar and planned to do the 3D animated films on its own. After laying the rotten egg known as Chicken Little, they were planning on doing Toy Story 3 all by themselves. I can imagine we'd be saying different things about the teaser if they stuck with that boneheaded move. What was its premise again?

It was to be about Buzz Lightyear being recalled to Taiwan and the other toys going to rescue him. So, basically the plot of Toy Story 2 with Buzz substituted for Woody. It was to be directed by Bradley Raymond, the genius who gave us such classics as Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World, The Hunchback of Notre Dame II and The Lion King 1½. The thought of how close this came to being a reality still gives me the shivers.

Hey Mike, Up was great. You'd love it. I'd call it mid-tier Pixar, but that's still like top-five-of-the-year material anyway.

That's great to hear. Going by the trailer and promotional shots I've seen, I'm already in love with the character designs and the very idea of an old man floating hit house away with a million balloons. I'm not as crazy about Monsters, Inc. as some people, but in my opinion, of all the Pixar directors, Pete Docter has the most cartoony sensibility, which is always a plus in my book.

Monsters Inc. was among my favorite Pixar films. The third act is as good as anything they've ever done.
