Coming November 3...

Blu-ray

A definite day one buy for me: one of my absolute favourite movies of all time and probably Hitchcock's most purely enjoyable romp.

The DVD, released in August 2000, was widely lauded in its day as a stunning restoration. However, mastered in standard definition and basically scrubbed of grain, it no longer looks particularly spectacular. By the sounds of it, Warner are giving it the 4K 8K treatment, so let's hope this VistaVision classic looks just as good as it possibly can on BD.

By the way, can anyone enlighten me on the original audio mixes that accompanied the film during its theatrical debut? The Internet Movie Database lists mono, as well as Dolby SR and Dolby Digital (the latter two formats clearly referring to theatrical re-releases, given that the film predates both these technologies), but was there also a multi-channel version back in 1959?

Updated Monday, July 20, 2009 at 12:16 PM: Mastered in 8K, according to this announcement. Additionally, the November 16 date I previously mentioned referred to the UK edition. The US release comes out a fortnight earlier, on November 3.

Oh, and in answer to my own question about the audio, according to this review, the 5.1 mix on the DVD "reproduces the three track stereo sound which was heard at the film's premiere engagements."
