Blu-ray

Firefly: The Complete Series (BD, 20th Century Fox, Region AB, Canada)

I finally stumped up the cash for this series, which for some reason I've never seen, despite how much I enjoy its movie continuation, Serenity. I picked this up on eBay at a decent price, and it's the Canadian version avec version française incluse, but I can tolerate the somewhat cluttered cover art for the sake of a discount.

Wow. Not to hype the show more (if such a thing is possible at this point), but it's truly special; magic in a bottle. The one show where Whedon nails - IMO - everything, right off the bat.

SERENITY is fun, but very obviously a 3-4 season "wrap-up" packed into a 2 hour film.

I thought the movie was decent (good vfx) but could barely make it through the pilot of the show.

You're just saying that to lower his expectations, right? Right..? Erm.

PS. I meant "lightning in a bottle" above - not sure if the other one is even a term. Unless I just invented it.

Erik, the show didn't blow me away. That's all I'll say.

Well, I watched the opening two-parter (Serenity) last night, and while I certainly enjoyed it, I can understand why the network got cold feet when it was delivered to them. It's certainly a slow burner, and I do wonder just how willing I would have been to stick with it if I wasn't already familiar with the universe from the movie. In a way, I enjoyed the pilot more as an "origin story" than as a self-contained episode. As Whedon pilots go, it's better than the first episode of Dollhouse, but I felt that the Buffy and Angel pilots did a better job of hooking me into the characters and their world.

How's the video quality? My brother's been nudging me to watch the series and movie for years, but rather than watch his DVDs, perhaps I'll just pick up the BDs.

It suffers to a degree from the fact that the CG was all rendered in standard definition, so any affected shots show a noticeable dip in image quality. The rest of it looks very good, though.

Which seems to be what they aimed for. Anyway, mostly agree with your other comments on the pilot (ANGEL's was pretty ho-hum though, I'd say the same thing is true for that; unless you already were familiar with the character...)

Still, hope you'll continue to enjoy the show - with the "network pilot" next, and become more engaged in the little world Whedon and Co. created.

I was sold after the word "Darn" was uttered in the next episode.
