I am with InMotion Hosting and was on a shared server.

Basically i run a shop using Zencart. MySQL queries is the problem with PHP based software and on shared servers bandwidth is also a major problem.

Ok to cut the story short. I am now on a VPS server at £300 a year.

Performance is vastly improved and i am running 4 MySQL databases.

3 shops and 1 movable type installation. Well really it's 2 shops and a test shop for new add ons.

Shared servers on Inmotion host about 1000 other people. Their VPS servers host a maximum of 60 other people. More secure too.

I recommend VPS.

Sorry the post went in twice. Please delete one of them.

You could have gone to Lunarpages and they would have bought out your remaining six months. They used to be pretty good although i don't know if they are still any good.

Basically do not believe all the unlimited crap that flies around. No host can give you unlimited and MySQL queries really cause problems on shared servers so i wouldn't be surprised if your new host is just as slow during peak hours.

If I was hosting an online store, then I would definitely be looking into a dedicated server. However, a shared server hosted by the likes of LD Hosting is currently more than sufficient for my needs, given that I only run a single MySQL database and the majority of my bandwidth is consumed by my HD screen captures, the requirements for which aren't exactly massive.

As for speed, I'm more than prepared to accept a speed dip during peak access, but I highly doubt that a wait of two minutes to execute a single 2 KB CGI script is likely. As far as I'm concerned, there was something seriously wrong with the server upon which I was previously hosted. The problem wasn't just during peak periods - it was consistent over a period of almost 48 hours, and had been less than impressive for months before that. I contrast, CGI script execution has been virtually instantaneous throughout the 24 hour period during which I have been with my new host.

It amazes me how many people are suckered by the "unlimited bandwidth, unlimited disk space" promises that a number of hosts make. Do people seriously think there are magical servers out there that aren't affected by the usual physical constraints? In many cases, "unlimited" seems to actually mean "Unlimited until we decide you're using too much space/bandwidth, at which point we'll unceremoniously give you the boot."

I found this film to be Clive Owen's excuse to be James Bond. Just like Tom Cruise and the Mission Impossible films.

I watched it last night and found it to be a beautifully shot but utterly tedious piece of self-important fluff. Wonderful-looking disc, though.
