The World at War (DVD, Fremantle, Region 0, UK)

I picked this up for £25 - a bargain for what is widely considered, with good reason, to be the best documentary ever made on the subject of the Second World War.

Unlike many war documentaries, which fall into the trap of simply fetishising guns and tanks, and becoming embroiled in the minutae of combat manoeuvres and tactics, The World at War concentrates on the human stories behind the conflict. I first saw this series when I was in my first year at secondary school and, at the tender age of eleven, it made a huge impact on me. Rewatching the first episode (A New Germany) for the first time in fifteen years, I quickly discovered that it had lost none of its impact. I'm definitely looking forward to the prospect of... well, not enjoying, given the harrowing subject matter, but certainly delving into all 26 episodes, not to mention the eight "Special Presentation" documentaries that are unique to the DVD release.
