Spooktacular BD fun

MGM and 20th Century Fox have dug into their collective vault and will be releasing an array of horror-themed titles on Blu-ray on September 15th. Making their high definition débuts are Child's Play, the first of the "Chucky" films; Misery, based on the Stephen King novel; the Eliza Dushku vehicle Wrong Turn and its straight to video sequel, Wrong Turn 2: Dead End. Also being released is The Hannibal Lecter Collection, which packages the already available The Silence of the Lambs together with its sequel, Hannibal (already available on an iffy-looking German BD), and Hannibal Lecter (or in this case Lektor)'s initial foray on to the big screen, Michael Mann's Manhunter (getting its first HD release).

Fox's pricing of these titles is a little bizarre, with the two BD/Digital Copy combo releases, Child's Play and Misery, working out as the cheapest of the bunch at $24.99, and the standalone Wrong Turn movies costing $29.99. The Lecter set, meanwhile, has a steep $69.99 RRP. I intend to pick up the latter at some stage, particularly if this edition of Hannibal turns out to be an improvement on its German predecessor, but not until it has been severely discounted.

Ahh, Mann's film, whilst dated, it still far superior to the lifeless remake/reinterpretation/reboot/whatever by "The Rat" -- who actually stole a lot of scenes shot-for-shot.

Also curious to how big the difference between the Aussie release of WRONG TURN and this will be. :)

I actually rather like Red Dragon. Ratner may as well have not even bothered turning up, so lacking is his style, but at least he has a decent script by Ted Tally and top-notch production design by Kristi Zea, both returning from The Silence of the Lambs.

I haven't seen Mann's version in years, and can remember very little of it beyond it being a veritable '80s time capsule. Alas, the '80s are far from my favourite decade. Quite the opposite, in fact. :D

Manhunter is pure 80s at its best (though personally I like the 80s)... The fantastic soundtrack alone is worth recommending. Ratner copied many shots from Mann's film and essentially made The Silence of the Lambs all over again for the people who complained Hannibal was nothing like it.
