This week's BDs: July 20 - July 26, 2009

1:46 PM / Blu-ray / Comments4 Comments

This is a new feature I'm starting up on a trial basis, listing the UK and US Blu-ray releases for the coming week, with titles I've ordered or intend to pick up at some point in the future (i.e. when prices come down) in bold. Provided it isn't too much of a hassle to update every week, that is, this will hopefully serve to inform people as to what's coming out rather than just tooting my own horn.

Note that some of these titles appear to be re-releases of Paramount BDs that were discontinued during their HD DVD-exclusive phase.

Coraline is fantastic. It's Henry Selick's finest film yet, and I believe the picture quality on the BluRay is flawless.

No love for The Pianist or Hellraiser?

The Warriors would be cool to have on Blu-ray if the transfer's good and they include the theatrical cut. The director's cut is lousy.

I'm waiting to see how Hellraiser measures up against the already available US version.

As for The Pianist, for some reason it's never really piqued my curiosity, but I'm a mid admirer of Roman Polanski and find the subject matter fascinating. I suspect I'll get around to it eventually.

How were the subtitles on the UK DVD of Switchblade Romance?

The US release (High Tension) was dubtitled, and only has portions of the UK commentary. If Lionsgate were to release it on Blu-ray I'd expect much the same treatment.
