True Blood - it's bloody good

Television
Blu-ray

I started watching this today, although given the sweltering heat I kind of wish I'd chosen something that wasn't set in the Deep South. Anyway, despite the fact that it did nothing to cool me down (seriously, if this fucking heatwave doesn't end soon I swear I'm going to break something), it seems like a great show so far (based on the first episode, that is). It has to be said that vampires are such a hard concept to pull off. Some writers go down the po-faced, deadly serious route, much to their detriment - see Twilight. Others admit the inherent silliness of the subject matter and go for a campy, tongue-in-cheek approach - for instance, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. So far, True Blood appears to occupy the middle ground, playing it straight for the most part but not afraid to poke fun at itself.

The Blu-ray Disc's image quality is terrific too, transcending its television origins and looking infinitely richer and more aesthetically pleasing than the consistently cheap-looking Weeds, the only other TV show I've seen on BD thus far. It looks to me like some grain reduction has been applied, and I do detect a slight hint of artificial sharpening on occasions, but this is very, very impressive stuff overall and looks a good deal better than some BDs I could mention of recent multi million dollar blockbusters.

PS. The shots below are all taken from the first two-thirds of the first episode, so there shouldn't be anything too spoilerific in them.

True Blood: Season 1, Episode 1 True Blood: Season 1, Episode 1 True Blood: Season 1, Episode 1 True Blood: Season 1, Episode 1 True Blood: Season 1, Episode 1 True Blood: Season 1, Episode 1 True Blood: Season 1, Episode 1 True Blood: Season 1, Episode 1 True Blood: Season 1, Episode 1

I was looking at the ratings on IMDB for the show.

Seems pretty adult ratings so is this show more violent/sexual/darker themed than the average television show or is it just that New Zealand and Australia are more restrictive with their ratings policy ?

Is it a good show as in is it as good as Buffy was and is it as good as Smallville, Lost or 24 ?

Well, you get to see tits and hear people say "fuck", so it's more adult in that sense. I've only seen the first episode so can't really speak for the show as a whole, but so far it does seem darker in tone than your average American primetime show.

As for how it compares to the other shows you asked about, I've no idea, (a) because I've only seen a single episode and (b) because the only one of these shows that I watched regularly was Buffy. I've never seen a single episode of Smallville and couldn't get into Lost or 24.

Oh, it gets even darker midway through the season.

I really enjoy the show and its gorgeous BD transfer. Wished HBO would start releasing the complete series of Six Feet Under on BD.

I find the series a bit pretentious. The dark & brooding Bill character only seems to have one emotion and never changes his face.

I do like the hero girl, she seems a different, although I think she should just fuck with Bill, this on and off reminds me too much of Buffy season 3.

And granny, well she's just weird.

The rest of the characters seem interesting, we'll see.

Watched eps. 1-3 so far.

I must admit that I'm finding the continued portrayal of male vampires as dark, brooding and handsome rather repetitive. It would certainly be interesting if we got an ugly, shallow one one of these days. :D

Wait, "dark & brooding" is pretentious? If there's one thing this show ain't, it would be that overused word. ;)

Happy Birthday, Michael!
