Blu-ray

Go (BD, Sony Pictures, Region ABC, UK)

One of my favourite films of the '90s. This one launched the Hollywood careers of a number of people, including The Bourne Identity director Doug Liman and John August, Tim Burton's go-to script guy. Nice to see that they've ditched the artwork that was used for the UK DVD, presumably since Katie Holmes isn't hot shit any more.

What's Go about? What kind of movie is it?

Don't forget the excellent No Doubt song that came out of it: New.

It's basically a story about a drug deal gone wrong. It's somewhere between a black comedy and a caper, told through three interconnected stories in a way that's somewhat similar to Pulp Fiction, although with a less chaotic timeline. Not sure if it would be your cup of tea, but it's very funny thanks to its irreverent attitude.

Marcus:

You know, I don't even remember that song. It can't have made that much of an impression on me.

Hell, I can at least give it a shot some time. Crime capers have gotten annoying since this decade everything is a Tarantino or Guy Ritchie-esque crime caper with snarky quips coming a mile a minute. They've also done this with Fargo (which was great) having so many of the cynical crime comedies taking place in wintery towns. But I guess this came out when it was still a fresh idea.

I thought Swingers (with Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau) launched Doug Liman's Hollywood career?

The film has certainly been compared to Pulp Fiction (often unfavourably - I think it was Roger Ebert who called it "Pulp Fiction-lite"), but personally I see little that is Tarantino-esque about it beyond the parallel storylines. The humour comes mainly from the absurd situations in which the characters find themselves rather than Tarantino-type referentiality.

Daniel:

Swingers was certainly an indie hit and it may have put Liman on the map, but I suspect it was Go (which started off as an independent movie but was acquired by Columbia just prior to its release) that allowed him to make the leap from $250,000 indie fare to something like the multi-million dollar Bourne Identity.

I'm worried that it hasn't aged terribly well, particularly the soundtrack. That Magic Carpet Ride remix...ugh!
