Just arrived...

2:33 PM / Blu-ray / Comments9 Comments

Blu-ray

Angel-A (BD, Optimum, Region B, UK)

Blu-ray

Subway (BD, Optimum, Region B, UK)

And some fun from our friends in the Netherlands:

Blu-ray

Blade (BD, RCV, Region ABC, Netherlands)

Blu-ray

Se7en (BD, RCV, Region ABC, Netherlands)

Unlike the thoroughly shoddy releases of these two films put out by Alliance Atlantis in Canada, these Dutch versions are both in their original aspect ratio (2.39:1) and look pretty good to my eyes. Both discs are bare-bones but region-free, with lossless English audio and removable Dutch subtitles, and haven't been beaten with the DNR stick... which is what I imagine will happen when New Line eventually releases them in the US.

I would love to hear more about Seven and Blade. Image quality and sound quality reviews please and detailed specs info.

Where to buy would be great too.

Also is Blade II available from the same place ?

Looks like it's only the first Blade that's available on BD in the Netherlands. That film was 1.85:1, though, so I'd imagine the Alliance release should be fine.

I've only had a brief look at them, but from what I saw both are way, way above average for catalogue titles. Natural grain, strong detail, a bit of ringing on Se7en (the pylons during the climax are noticeably affected) but nothing too outrageous.

By the way, these discs came from Free Record Shop.

Picked up Blade myself and aside from possible contrast boosting, it was well worth the 15 Euros. The soundtrack is phenomenal.

Yeah, sorry, I was referring to Blade II - should've made that clearer.

Whiggles, I always hold your opinions very high and they are usually very close to my own.

But if possible I'd really like to see some caps for Blade And Seven. Seven is one of my favorites and as you mention, I'm sure Warner/New Line will screw up the US releases.

BTW, I see front the artworks pretty much mimics the style Sony uses on their discs. Does RCV distributes Sony stuff in Netherlands?

These are certainly both in my "to watch" pile, so I'll report on them both as soon as possible.

As far as I know RCV doesn't have any involvement with Sony. I'm not sure why they went for such a similar silver "swish" on the cover art, but then again Anchor Bay did much the same, only they put theirs at the top rather than the bottom.

Michael, can you confirm that Blade has the artifacts seen in these captures?
