Star Trek (2009) (Play.com exclusive steelbook) (BD, Paramount, Region ABC, UK)

Bought entirely based on the highly positive feedback I've heard from everyone, from my brother to my work colleagues. I've actually never seen a single Star Trek movie or a single episode of any of the various TV series. We all have to start somewhere, I suppose.

Wow, while this is a good starting point (it's a good movie), you should without a doubt check out the original series. The first two seasons (the good ones, IMO) are out on Blu-Ray. I can only envy someone who has not been exposed to Trek yet.

Here are the best episodes (IMO):

City on the Edge Forever
Mirror Mirror
Space Seed
Devil in the Dark
Amok Time
Tomorrow is Yesterday

Here are also what I consider the best Star Trek movies (though my opinions do not really differ from general opinion...)

Star Trek: The Motion Picture
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
Star Trek: First Contact

I already bought and viewed this.

Decent movie but i still consider Star Trek II and Star Trek VIII better movies. Paramount for the first time since the original motion poicture actually gave a Trek movie a decent budget and it shows.

This one really had everything thrown at it but as they explain in the extra content they were actually trying to do a Star Wars type film with Star Trek and i feel they actually could have slowed down a little by adding some of the deleted scenes. Most were cut with good reason but some of those deleted scenes should have been in the movie. ( I think )

Personally i think the image quality is very good and similiar to the theatrical screenings and under your rating system i would give it at least 9/10 although i felt the audio was the weaker point and the subwoofer could have gone deeper and we should have had more split surrounds for this type of large budget action/sci fi film.

I watched Outlander after this and it had just as good image quality but a better sound mix ( in my opinion )

Might pick this up, though my budget is a bit tight right now and I'm more interested in getting the recently released UK Descent blu, depending on the quality.

Oh, and Michael, have you seen the news about the upcoming Suspiria Blu? Nouveaux Pictures are promising a new master, rather than the Italian one. Here's hoping! :)

Incidentally i was over at Home Theater Forum and i see the restoration expert Robert Harris was talking about Leon and the new Sony release. It's the same contrast boosted version Europe got because apparently Luc Besson himself actually supervised it and prefers this contrast boosted look. Hence it's director approved although that doesn't always mean it's great. ( See French Connection )

One thing the Sony seems to have in it's favour is zero edge enhancement or at least reviews don't mention it having any but i seem to recall reviews of the UK disc saying it had some.

Regarding Star Trek. It really is a fun action packed movie and i look forward to the sequel which may feature Khan and they seem to want Javier Bardem for that part. Great choice if they can get him and decide to go with Khan for the sequel.

The fact we now have a different timeline to the original Trek means they can have fun with it and go off in a different direction. What happens to Vulcan was a brave move and i doubt Roddenberry or Rick Berman or Brannon Braga would have had the balls to do that.

I am excited about the Newman/Jones commentary, though I doubt they'll tell me anything I don't already know about the film. I hope they don't waste too much time on the usual "Daria wrote the film and wanted the lead role" and "Phantom of the Paradise got Harper the role" stories that pretty much any fan of the film should already know.

Kahn in STAR TREK 2? Wouldn't that be a little bit... too obvious? How about some Tribblets, heh?

Yeah, fingers crossed about Suspiria, although I'd be very surprised if a brand new master has materialised. If they've used the Lustig master I'll be very happy, although I hear tell he charges rather a lot for the use of his elements, which might preclude Nouveaux from going down that route.

Marcus:

Did you listen to the Jones/Newman track on the Blue Underground release of The Bird with the Crystal Plumage? New information or not, I found them to be a highly entertaining duo with a good rapport. It's actually one of my favourite commentaries and I'm hoping they manage to capture lightning in a bottle a second time.

Yes, I listened to it and remember being pretty entertained. Perhaps the best DVD commentary of any Argento film. Hope the upcoming Suspiria one is every bit as good as well.

That's even more amazing than never seeing Ghostbusters.

IMO the new Star Trek film was fun but I would've preferred more character scenes and less action.

Think I was one of the few people that wasn't overly impressed with the latest Star Trek.

I've seen and liked a number of TNG and DS9 episodes. The couple of the movies I've seen weren't anything I thought were much more than average but I was hopeful the new one was going to exceed them easily. Instead, it felt much more like a generic summer action movie and isn't anything I have any desire to revisit.

Me too. I watched it this evening and, while I'll probably post some more detailed thoughts tomorrow when I get the chance, for now I'll just say that I found it all pretty tedious. A lot of explosions, loud noises, posturing and a grossly over-inflated running time do not a good film make, in my opinion.

You would? Isn't that master a DigiBeta? ;)
