BD

James Bond Blu-ray (BD, 20th Century Fox/MGM, Region ABC, UK)

Six Bond movies on BD for £8 - I kid you not. Borders has gone into receivership and is flogging their goods at a discount. Most items have only been reduced by 20%... but when a title with an RRP of over £100 has already been (incorrectly, I assume) labelled at £10, the result is a bargain of such monumental proportions that I couldn't possibly resist it...

...even if one of them is the one with the invisible car...

I can't wait to hear your opinions on these films, especially since as far as I remember you haven't seen a single Connery, Lazenby, or Moore in their entirety. I can only envy anyone going into those for the first time.

This set has four awesome Bond films.

Dr. No - Though it's not one of the best, Connery gives his most impressive performance as Bond. The film is fun, but sadly it takes quite a while for the fun to start since way too much time is spent on Bond investigating a murder (It feels like an episode of Danger Man). Don't worry though, once he gets to the island it gets much better.

From Russia With Love - The best Connery Bond film IMO. Had Alfred Hitchcock made a Bond film, it would look like this.

Thunderball - Another great Connery Bond film. This one is love-it-or-hate it depending on whether or not you like underwater action sequences. I for once love them.

For Your Eyes Only - With the exception of the final "comedy sketch" at the end, this is a Timothy Dalton Bond film with Roger Moore in it. If you enjoyed the Daltons (I remember you did), there's no reason to not enjoy this one. Not Moore's best, but it does show that he can take the role seriously when he wants to. Just wait until you see the truck kicking scene.

Live and Let Die - Poor Moore had by far the worst Bond debut film. Weak script hurts this one. It has a good villain, a good bondgirl, colorful locales, good henchmen great music, etc... it could have been a great Bond film. But Tom Mankiewicz's script it dreadful, a very thin plot involving drug dealing barely connected by chase sequence after chase sequence, all poorly filmed by Guy Hamilton. Everyone I show the movie to asks "that's it?" once it's over and I can't blame them.

Die Another Day - This never happened. Cool theme song though.

I hope you can get past all the atrocious edge enhancement on Die Another Day. The worst i have seen on a blu ray to date.

I took a look at Die Another Day last night. Honestly, if this is the worst edge enhancement you've seen on BD, count yourself lucky you've never seen Gladiator or Gangs of New York.

I never rented or bought Gladiator based on the reviews and screenshots.

I am beginning to think you are not that sensitive to edge enhancement and can live with it easier on Blu Ray than i can.

Yeah, don't be watching the UK Ip Man disc if the EE on Die Another Day bothers you. DAD gets a pass from me simply because of the car chase sequence. Yes it's a stupid, stupid movie, but it's not po-faced bollocks like Quantum Of Solace either.

I would much rather watch Quantum of Solace than anything in Die Another Day again save for perhaps the first 20 minutes. Personally I found the ice car chase sequence between Bond and Zhao with their gadget cars pretty silly. Then again, I like Quantum a great deal.

A HUGE warning to Michael though: DO NOT watch For Your Eyes Only before watching On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Unless of course you know what happens at the end of OHMSS.

This is where we'll have to agree to disagree. I'll take silly Bond over Jason Bourne Bond any day of the week.

That's my problem with DAD though, I wouldn't mind it if it was "silly" as in You Only Live Twice or The Spy Who Loved Me, but it wasn't really all the way "silly" and tried to be a dark serious Bond film during many parts (which is the problem with Brosnan's last two films to be honest).

At least QoS knew where to go, shaky cam an all.
