Top 10 films of the decade: #1. Mulholland Dr.

#1. Mulholland Dr.
(David Lynch, 2001)

An absolute masterpiece, a mesmerising fever dream told by the king of fever dreams, and one of the most powerful achievements of cinema in the last decade. Whether it came about intentionally or completely by accident, it's an incredibly intoxicating cocktail of images, sounds and emotions, and one that I'm happy to call one of my favourite films ever created.

  1. Mulholland Dr.
  2. Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain
  3. Wall-E
  4. Hannibal
  5. Changeling
  6. Atonement
  7. The Descent
  8. Children of Men
  9. Volver
  10. Les triplettes de Belleville

This is one of my all-time favorites as well. Happily I read the announcement today that it will be part of the next bunch of titles released in the Studio Canal Collection on Blu-ray: http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=3963

I think this will be a good time to replace my old French DVD (which has forced subs that my current Blu-ray player isn't able to remove).

1. Love it. Is there reasonably priced, worthwhile Region A BD yet? If you haven't yet, you MUST see Twin Peaks the series and film!
2. Love it.
3. It was cute - 1st 1/2 was superior.
4. Love it.
5. Decent. Similar in tone but not as good as L.A. Confidential, imo.
6. Haven't seen it.
7. Very overrated, imo.
8. Liked it very much.
9. Haven't seen it.
10. One of the films I've been meaning to get around to seeing, but haven't yet.

Man, I think I would have a very hard time picking my 10 favorite films from the last decade. I always do a Top 10 Films & Albums each year, but I've only been recording my choices for about 5 years. Maybe I'll give it a go.

I'm surprised to see that I've seen half the films on your list (10 and 4 - 1 inclusive). I thought it would be a smaller number.

As far as I can tell, the only BD release of Mulholland Dr. is a Norwegian release from Pan Vision. Erik over at Hundland.org has posted some screen caps. He says it's locked to Region B, though.

It's certainly tough coming up with a Top 10 for an entire decade, particularly if, as I did, you set yourself a goal of covering as wide a range of styles and genres as possible. My list is a little too biased towards English language productions for my liking, but I suppose to an extent that reflects my viewing habits, so three foreign language titles out of ten is actually quite high.

Baron:

I have a feeling you'd like Children of Men, going by some of the reviews you've published on your LJ.

EDITED TO ADD: Oops, for some reason BobaFett's comment got flagged as spam and I've only just unearthed it now. Hopefully the Studio Canal BD release will correct the pitch fault that affected their HD DVD.
