Top 10 films of the decade: #10. Les triplettes de Belleville

#10. Les triplettes de Belleville
(Sylvain Chomet, 2003)

A thoroughly unique tale that manages to combine a childish curiosity with more grown-up cynicism, Sylvain Chomet's excellent achievement in the field of animation shows that a film with little to no dialogue can be deeply engaging and that the Japanese aren't the only people capable of producing animation aimed primarily at an adult audience.

Updated Tuesday, November 22, 2009 at 00:40 AM: In my eagerness to get the list underway, I posted the first entry a day early. If I'd continued down that route, I'd have reached the end on the 30th rather than the 31st. Therefore, this entry has been moved from the 21st to the 22nd, and things will continue as planned with film #9 being posted on the 23rd, etc.

I have this one, though haven't had a chance to watch it. I'll have to make a point to of checking it out before year's end.

On a side note, I'm looking at the pixellated images and none of them seem to be The Dark Knight! What gives? It is definitively the best movie ever!

Are you going to recommend the best home video version for each title too? That would be fun.

I have Triplettes on french HD DVD, which is very nice indeed.

I presume #2 is Amelie and #4 is Hannibal? :D

I need to watch more 2009 entries before my list, but I'd say Dogville, Amores Perros, Children of Men, City of God, Amelie, Up, Nobody Knows, Marie Antoinette, Spirited Away, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and Finding Nemo will have to fit somewhat in it.

If Lex's predictions are correct, I'd say the only one I seriously disagree is Atonement, which I saw once and dismissed it as passable "Oscar whore" material at its best. Nice soundtrack composition however and I admit it does have brilliant tracking shot despite its "look at me, look at me" attitude.

10. Les triplettes de Belleville
09. ?
08. Don't know why, but I suspect this is Clive Owen on the left. Could well be Children of Men as Dan suggests.
07. I'd guess The Descent purely based on the fact it's been featured here a lot, and the colour of the shot.
06. ?
05. Changeling
04. Hannibal
03. Monster's Inc.

Great list, Dan, MEMORIES OF MURDER is a rarely-mentioned gem.

Is "09" HIDDEN/CACHÉ by any chance..? :) A shot of Binoche?

I wasn't planning to, but maybe I will now. As for the best version of Belleville, I don't believe it's been released on BD yet, which means the French HD DVD still reigns supreme.

Everyone:

Keep the votes coming! I can tell I'm going to have to make this much harder when I do it again in another ten years' time. :D Still, a few of the guesses have been completely off the mark...

Todd -

I wouldn't have thought I'd say this, but if I made such a list, The Dark Knight would indeed be a serious contender. It's not absolutely perfect, but given its aims it doesn't have to be - it's so rare for a Hollywood film to have the goals it has in the first place.

Michael -

You're off to a good start!

I've had a copy of Les triplettes de Belleville in my 'to watch pile' since its release. Perhaps now I'll actually get around to watching it. Really looking forward to reading the rest of these posts. From looking at the speculation around your possible choices the list looks very promising so far.

David may be right that #3 may be Wall-E. I don't particularly remember any scene in the movie to be blue hued but I'm just having a memory lapse here. It also may be Finding Nemo.

I also had a tough time placing The Dark Knight on my list but it had such an uneven third act that it would probably be in my top 20.

yeah i thought so,, but it's way before the 2000 mark ; anyway, we'll know very soon :)

#8 is children of men, no doubt. and #3 is definitively monster inc
I'm agry that if atonement make the list, it's an odd choice, but it has its charms

it's really interesting to see how some images can be a lot more than just images...
