Image comparison: The Descent

4:33 PM / Blu-ray / Comments4 Comments

I know, I know, I said I'd do this ages ago, but other commitments kept getting in the way, to the extent that I completely forgot I was going to do this in the first place. Thanks to Adam for reminding me, you now have a comparison between the Australian and UK releases of Neil Marshall's excellent The Descent to feast your eyes on.

Basically, my initial impressions turned out to be right on the money, but there are some minor differences between the two. Not enough to tip the scale and make me reject one outright in favour of the other, but read on to see what I mean:

Cheers for that Michael. I've been trying to find a review of the UK Descent BD for ages. I'll be picking this one up tomorrow.

Don't suppose you've got any info on the upcoming Suspiria Blu regarding A/V quality? I'm trying not to get my hopes up just in case.

Oh, and belated Festive greetings to you!

Afraid I haven't seen the Suspiria BD. I've got my copy pre-ordered, but I'm not expecting it before the release date. If nothing else, the buzz I've heard suggests that the audio problems with the Anchor Bay mix have been avoided, and people have praised the image quality, but who knows what that means at the end of the day?

If nothing else, I hope it's worth it for the new extras.

Thank you for this overview Michael. I'm eagerly awaiting delivery of the UK Blu-ray release. By the way I've recently picked up a 5.1 surround sound system and wondered what BD discs your felt packed the best sound mixes? I gave the UK BD release of STAR TREK a spin once I had got all the amp and speakers connected and it did sound quality.

Star Trek is a good one for audio if I recall correctly. Casino Royale sounds great too, and there are some wonderful uses of rear channel effects in The Descent. There's also District 13: Ultimatum, Monsters, Inc., Bolt, and pretty much any major Hollywood action movie. You're spoiled for choice.
