Tangled teaser

10:43 PM / Animation / Comments8 Comments

It's like SHREK crossed with early 90s Disney, and it's not pleasant. Seriously, John Lasseter, what are you THINKING?

(Admittedly, it's slightly less painful with the sound turned off, but still...)

To cleanse your eyes and ears of the monstrosity, here is a video of a Siberian Husky singing to a baby to stop it crying. (Perhaps the baby had just seen the TANGLED trailer?)

The trailer reminded me more of two Dreamworks films than Disney, those films being The Road To El Dorado and Sinbad.

Early nineties Disney was fab, Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King, i even liked Pocahontas thanks to two quality songs in it.

Horrible, just horrible.
I really hate the acting too. The animators have been using the same gestures and facial expressions for so many years it's not funny. I know these are so-called classical animation techniques, but they're starting to look extremely clichéd. Remember that most of the timings and expressions were developed from studying the broader gestures found in 20/30's cinema acting. It's a very conservative approach to a genre which, by it's nature, should encourage innovation.

I fear innovation becomes too much of an effort and an expense, when the tempting option copy&paste{same texture | same shader | same eye-movement pattern | same facial 3D model | same motion capture} is just a couple of innocent clicks away.

The same thing happens in video games, the latest consoles and PC technology allows a fantastic range of colours but most games don't use it, instead you get the same backgrounds being rejigged.

At the end of the day though it's the script thats important for a movie and i think it's too early to say if this will be good based on a a few small clips in a teaser.

That dog is funny in the other clip.

Sylvain Chomet's (Les triplettes de Belleville) latest, The Illusionist, looks amazing, plus it's set in my home town Edinburgh. Now this is what animators should be aspiring to...

Re: THE ILLUSIONIST - yes indeedy. One of my most anticipated films of the year.

Marcus:

Because apparently boys don't want to go and see a film about a female lead, the Rapunzel story has been changed so it's no longer about Rapunzel. The Aladdin lookalike is now the main character. I wish I was making this up.

Pretty stupid decision. If you watch the making-of featurette in The Little Mermaid you will see that many studio insiders believed it would never be more successful than The Great Mouse Detective because it was a "girl's" movie. Little did they know...
