Just goes to show what the studios can do when they actually put the effort in.

Where did you buy it, incidentally?

Well i was going to wait for the UK or American release but it seems they are just quietly swapping the old one over with the new release and a yellow sticker ( i think ) distinguishes the releases, with that in mind i might well be prepared to buy the Dutch release.

So any links to where it can be bought and what extra's do you get.

Is this the theatrical and extended editions of the movie ?

I got mine from Mediadis.com when they were briefly shipping the version that comes in the original case with a "10th Anniversary Edition" sticker on the back. However, its status on the site has now gone back to "pre-order", so I imagine they're waiting for the new packaging before shipping out any more.

Foxymulder:

I'm not sure where it can be purchased at the moment - see my answer to Olly.

As for the contents of the discs themselves, you get everything you got on the previous release: same extras, both cuts, even the same menus. It's "just" the transfer itself that has been swapped out.

Cheers for the info.

I've waited this long, so I might just hold out until the fixed ones propagate into shops, or I can buy the American Sapphire version. That or just buy one from the shop once the disc exchange programme is up and running.

So that's two Blu-Ray releases this year which have been re-done (Gladiator and Gangs of New York). I haven't seen Gladiator yet but the new GONY transfer looks far more film-like than most catalogue BRs and Gladiator looks to have been given a similarly classy transfer - almost as though someone had been personally ensuring the transfer is done well. (Oh and is Fifth Element another ?) I'm tempted to say if this is the outcome it's worth the botch-up in the first place !

I intend to go into a few physical stores soon to try and find the re-released version here in the States. I asked Amazon about whether they stocked the redone version and they claimed they didn't—but I think they may have been looking for a completely new product, even though I told them it looks the same just with a yellow UPC bar. Frustrating that Paramount wouldn't give it a whole new release here: "digitally remastered" or something plastered on the cover.

Yes indeedy. Re-releases like GLADIATOR and GANGS OF NEW YORK take some of the sting out of atrocities like PREDATOR.

Christopher:

On AVS, quite a few people are reporting that the remastered version is in stores but DOESN'T have a yellow UPC bar. Instead, what you should be looking for is a copy that doesn't say "2-disc set" above the Paramount logo on the back cover.

It just gets more confusing by the second. The reality seems to be that Paramount don't really want to admit that they've rolled out a completely new transfer. They seem to be quietly replacing existing copies and equally quietly implementing a replacement programme for the "minority" of viewers who have a "personal preference" for good image quality. The reality, I suspect, is that Ridley Scott finally saw the old release and went ballistic. Given his strong visual sensibility, and his previous comments about the Blu-ray format (I believe "like looking out of a window" is the phrase he used in relation to BODY OF LIES), I can't imagine him keeping quiet about the previous GLADIATOR release.

Yikes. That's a rather itty-bitty detail to look out for. That makes me annoyed that they wouldn't at least give a yellow UPC bar.

I hope that's the case then. I'll check out some stores and see if the boxed "2-DISC SET" text is missing.

Christopher - the important thing is that you check the case insert inside, not the cardboard slipcover for the missing "2-Disc Set".

Most slipcovers seem to not have the "2-Disc Set" written on them regardless of what's inside - but what counts is the cover insert inside.

My copy, bought in-store at Best Buy on Tues, doesn't have the "2-Disc Set" on either the slipcover or the case insert. Its the remaster alright.

Argh. Well, serves me right for not shopping at a store where I could actually remove the slipcover. I viewed a few copies of the BD, and on the slipcovers some had the text omitted above the logo. However, all the BDs were inside plastic cases that are removed at checkout, and when I get home and slide the cover off, I notice "2-DISC SET" is written above the logo. I hoped it wouldn't mean anything, but popping the disc in, it's the old transfer.

Gonna look into the exchange program, I suppose.

Christopher, where did you buy it. If it was in a supermarket you should be able to take it back. Although apparently there is now a UK exchange program with Universal.

The code should be different on the spine of the Blu-ray as should the EAN, on the re-release of Saving Private Ryan the spine code, EAN and even a picture on the back had been re-aligned. Even the text on the disc was a different colour, new copy has blue text.
If the EAN etc. isn't different, then it will just get confusing.

Got mine at Walmart. It and Target are the closest stores without having to drive 35 miles—though I should have just gone with Target where they're not super paranoid, and they keep the BDs on the shelves without special lock cases around them.

Thinking I'll try returning it tomorrow. Returning an opened item for a refund isn't really all that difficult to do there, so hopefully I'll have someone who'll understand my situation.

Couldn't get a refund since the BD was opened, and I asked the guys at the store if I could have them open all the lock cases so I could check the backs. Didn't have it, so drove to another Walmart, did the same, and thankfully the first copy I looked at didn't have the text above the Paramount logo on the case. Brought it home and it's the new transfer, and maaaaan is it quite a difference. I just skimmed through scenes, and the same scenes which looked like total garbage on the first copy I brought home, looked absolutely stunning on this new one.

I can't believe that a DNR'ed-to-hell transfer that essentially looks no better than a DVD upconvert (well, not even; I've watched upscaled DVDs that look more filmic and pleasing) got such praise when it was released. I wonder what all those reviewers think of the new transfer.
