Just arrived...

BD

INFERNO (BD, Arrow Video, Region ABC, UK)

Thoughts to follow once I've collected 'em... :)

Also:

BD BD BD

The extended television editions of Stieg Larsson's MILLENNIUM trilogy. I've taken a gander at THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE and I'm utterly floored by how much was taken out for the theatrical version and also how much material was re-ordered. I need to get my hands on some subtitles, but I'm already beginning to think the theatrical cut was a hatchet job of KINGDOM OF HEAVEN proportions.

Oh, thank god. The sleeve is reversible.

Arrow is responsible for some of the most horrible - and misleading - cover art I've seen. Particularly dreadful was The Card Player, I remember.

If "Inferno" ends up looking good, I may have to import, unless Blue Underground or Anchor Bay release it in the States. The latter has actually made a couple extremely solid Blu-ray transfers ("Hellraiser" and "The Evil Dead"), some of the best I've seen.

Yah i watched The Evil Dead tonight, bloody fantastic transfer, i was really pleased with it. The film is simple enough but still entertains me a lot, great camerawork and i love the atmosphere in this movie.

It's still hard to believe James Ferman and his censors banned this and The Daily Mail spouted it was a danger to children and a "video nasty" i just hope as Michael says in an earlier post to me that the economy will keep the current conservative party too busy to interfere with the BBFC.

Regarding Arrow, from some of the comparisons i have seen of a few of their titles i think they need to improve the compression on their releases, maybe Inferno will be great in that regard.

I love Arrows Blu-ray releases, I have the Dawn and Day of the Dead sets. So packed with stuff, awesome. Ithink I'll buy more of their releases starting with City of the Living Dead then probably Inferno.

BU have already announced that they're planning to release Inferno, Deep Red and Cat O Nine Tails sometime in 2011.

Can't wait for the review myself. Arrow has consistently put more extras - and covers! - forward than anyone else in the business, but they've also had all their transfers outclassed by Blue Underground and Anchor Bay, often at the compression level. The Anchor Bay transfer on Day of the Dead was no looker to start with, but the Arrow version is just a bloody mess.

I'll probably get a few of the Arrow BDs someday, maybe even double-dip just for the mountains of extras, but the fact that they're always 50hz makes them just a bit inconvenient for a Yank like myself.

The Evil Dead looks amazing, I'll give Anchor Bay that. Too bad the other two films in the trilogy still look better on DVD than they do any other format!

I'm keen on hearing your thoughts on it! :)

The Camera Obscura Blu-ray release of the film got postponed again, but since they are a small label and want to make their Blu-ray as good as possible, I will be patient. ;)
At least they managed to interview Dario Argento for their new documentary (against my expectations) and the audio commentary with Kessler/Stigelegger is already finished. The last I read from them on a forum is that they plan a further interview with a so far undisclosed person on Friday.

Personally I'll wait for the German release, but I'm very interested about the image quality of the Arrow nevertheless.

I should hopefully have the review up by the weekend. It's basically written, but I'm doing a bit of fact-checking before I put it up. Bottom line, though:

Audio - good
Extras - good
Video - not so good
