#1040: Never Let Me Go

BD

(BD, 20th Century Fox, Region AB, USA)

I recently read and was rather enthralled by the Kazuo Ishiguro novel and decided that catching up with the film adaptation was the next logical step. Shall be interested to see how Alex Garland and Mark Romanek's take on the material gels (or doesn't, as the case may be) with how I visualised it.

I didn't realize there was a novel before I saw the movie. From what I hear, they cut a lot of material from the book. However, I still thought it was the best film of 2010. It deserved several Oscar nods, especially in Cinematography and Best Score.

Caught a preview of this film on the Prince Charles , on the day after I had finished reading the novel! Something you should never do.

Good Performances and tecnically flawless; still failed to capture IMO, the feelings of dread and devastation that bubble under the surface of Katie H.'s apparently calm white voice. the narrator on both the book and the novel.

Funnily enough as I was reading I couldn't help picturing Carey Mulligan and Keira Knightley as "my" Kathy and Ruth.

I also plan on watching this soon. Though I also liked his feature film One Hour Photo, Mark Romanek is one of my favorite music video directors. Essential viewing (especially now in the YouTube age) includes David Bowie's Jump they Say, Michael Jackson's Scream, and his masterpiece: Madonna's Bedtime Story.

Very good movie IMO, though I feel had I not read the book I would have been completely lost regarding what "the guardian" and "the gallery" are. What I'd like to call a "correct" adaptation.
