#1065: The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie

1:29 PM / Blu-ray / Comments4 Comments

BD

(BD/DVD combo, Paramount, Region ABC/1, USA)

If you don't love SpongeBob, you have no heart. Incidentally, this was one of the first titles Paramount ever announced for release on HD DVD and BD, back in 2006. Five years and one dead format later, it's finally materialised.

The only good SpongeBob episodes are from seasons 1-3. It has the same "duality" humor with which both children and adults can enjoy.

Everything after that is complete shit and utterly unfunny.

Everything leading up to the movie I do love. Everything afterward... eh. It's better than a lot of the dreck children are offered, but the returns diminish pretty damned hard for poor Spongebob about the time King Neptune and his Doug cast-off of a daughter is introduced in the movie... that's not to say the film doesn't finish off strong (thanks to The Hoff!), but their introduction could well be the turning point for the whole series.

The show never quite recovers, and some of the "specials" (particularly the one with David Bowie) are downright cringeworthy... but I'll admit even the worst of latter day Spongebob is infinitely more watchable than the 11th hour episodes of Nickelodeon's own Ren and Stimpy.

...also, HOLY CRAP!! How did I not know that the first season of Rocko's Modern Life was getting a DVD release this friggin' Tuesday?! I'm fully expecting it to be cut to pieces, but hey, this late in the game I'll take whatever I can get.

Kentai,

Do you know if they're releasing the uncut episodes or the ones that Nickelodeon decided to edit later?

Sadly, the Shout Factory website says it'll be the censored re-broadcast episodes.
