#1067: Rififi

3:02 PM / Blu-ray / Comments7 Comments

BD

(BD/DVD combo, Arrow Films, Region B/2, UK)

This BD looks bee-yoo-tee-ful:

Rififi

I also picked up Arrow's BD of SPIRITS OF THE DEAD (HISTOIRES EXTRAORDINAIRES), which I'm told also looks excellent, but I'm saving that one for my birthday.

Haven't got Rififi yet, I'm optimistically hoping the price will drop, but I'll probably have to cave in soon.

I'll be interested to see what you make of Spirits of the Dead. It looks very good to me, but that may only be in comparison with the previous DVD, which was atrocious. I have seen it in the cinema too, but it was a pretty tatty print if I remember right.

I ordered "Spirits of the Dead" last year for Halloween, but it was postponed and then I didn't get around watching it. From the glimpses I took at it the transfer appeared to be good. As other Arrow releases (with the replaceable cover art packaging) usually come with problematic transfers and bad compression, these ones seem to be done by a completely different team. Regarding "Spirits of the Dead" I especially like the audio options and the inclusion of the French version (albeit in SD) which contains different takes together with the American Vincent Price intro as extras.

I am actually really curious about the film and the Poe interpretations of these directors, it seems to be intriguing. Nevertheless I managed not to watch it so far. ;)
At least I finally watched the BD of "Monsters" yesterday.

I'm so pissed.
I sold my Criterion DVD when I saw this coming out and unlike all the Arrow BDs, it's Region B, so I can't play it!
I didn't purchase it, but I hope that Criterion releases a BD eventually from the same transfer.

Hopefully this is a sign of Arrow turning a corner.

I don't think Arrow have turned any corners, they've just acquired a couple of masters from someone other than whoever it is mastering the Argento films!

It's a rather lovely transfer, but there's definitely some sharpening going on. I found it to be most striking during some of the diffused-lit night scenes.

Spirits of the Dead would have looked great but they ruined it with unnecessary DNR (which doesn't seem to have made the picture much clearer, mostly it just created smeary grain and some trademark Arrow artifacting.)
