Have never seen either of these... well, I think I might have seen the end of TRON years ago on TV.

Tron: Legacy, on the other hand...

Tron Legacy was the worst film of 2010. I look forward to your appraisal.

Love the way Disney label their entire back catalogue 'Classic'.

Both good films. Screw critics.

Brian:

Not just their back catalogue. Until recently, Disney's UK branch was labelling everything produced by their feature animation division "classic" upon release, including the likes of TREASURE PLANET and BROTHER BEAR. Oh, and the farmed-out-to-Australia cheapquel THE JUNGLE BOOK 2.

It's been a few years since I last watched Tron, I'd definitely like to pick it up on blu-ray. Not sure if I will get it on its own, or with Legacy.

Seeing them both a while back, I found that Tron hasn't aged too well, but you have to respect it for what it did. I get nightmares imagining the render times..

Tron: Legacy on the other hand was right up my alley; stupid, action-packed, epic and loud. A sexy two hour Daft Punk music video. Hope you'll find a favourite among the two.

...which reminds me, Interstella 5555 could really do with a BD release.

An Interstella 5555 BD, now that I'd be all over.

Sudden urge now to watch the DVD.

Both are great films.

I really enjoyed Tron Legacy in 3D. Love the Daft Punk soundtrack too.

@Chris: Too bad the DVD is a field-blended mess. I borrowed my friend's PAL version and noticed it was a standards conversion so thought I'd be smart and buy the US version. The US version is a standards conversion of the standards conversion. Fail.

Pretty much agree with Robin. Tron was simply too cheesy for me to enjoy (and I had never seen it before.) Tron Legacy on the other hand was fine. It was largely just stupid action, and I don't usually enjoy those kind of movies, but I give them a pass if they at least have an interesting and unique visual style, e.g. 300.

Love the music too. Perfect mix of Hans Zimmer, Mass Effect and a bit of Blade Runner/Vangelis. Even bought the limited edition 2LP soundtrack.

I'll be posting my thoughts on both films before too long, though. In short, though, I agree with Robin and Paku: I found TRON too abstract for me to really care about what was happening, whereas I thought TRON: LEGACY had just the right amount of action movie cheese and visual inventiveness. Plus, Olivia Wilde with a Louise Brooks haircut and Michael Sheen camping it up something rotten. What's not to like?

I too noticed the MASS EFFECT influence, though I thought it extended far beyond the music. The whole visual design felt like it took far more of its cues from MASS EFFECT than the original TRON.

lol All gone quiet since you said you liked Tron Legacy. :) Like I said, I really enjoyed it...

I imagine you're getting the Mass Effect vibe because that game massively (pardon the pun) rips off Syd Mead, who of course designed a lot of stuff for Tron, and whose designs were "evolved" for Tron Legacy.
