Thoughts on The Taking of Pelham One Two Three BD

Microphone is still crap and boosting the volume just makes it sound worse. Might have to look into a standalone mike...

I have a Panasonic SD-600 camcorder, 1080p at 50fps, real good image quality, i was going to do what you are doing and try onscreen reviewing, two things stopped me, first off i wasn't brave enough, i felt laid bare sitting in front of a camera and secondly i feel YouTube and Vimeo quality is lacking, too many artifacts.

I wish i had your courage to do it though.

Actually, volume-wise this is way better than the first 2 vids.
If you're still concerned, I'm sure you could grab a cheap lapel mic (that's what we use for the webinars that I help produce/moderate at my work - on a nice Sony 720p camera!)

Are there going to be screencaptures for this film on your site in the near future or do you intend to just focus on these videos from now on? To be clear... I do really like them and I am not really experiencing problems with the audio but I liked the screencaptures as well. ;-)

Foxy:

How much did that set you back, out of interest? The webcam I picked up was only £40, and I don't suppose you can reasonably expect much for that sort of money.

Daniel:

Oh, it's definitely louder - but that's only because I boosted the volume. It still sounds pretty lousy and has a lot of background noise, which is my main concern. I think I'll look into picking up a clip-on mic.

Elvis:

Don't worry, the screen captures and written reviews aren't going anywhere. The videos are just a little side project, partly an attempt to motivate me to put out some more content. I doubt I'll do a video for every BD I watch (or even most of them) - this was more of an excuse to experiment with the camera.

It was on sale at Amazon, £449 but then i needed a 16gb memory card which stores roughly 80 odd minutes of video and then i needed a tripod, its bitrate is variable but maxes out at a non-standard 28mbp/s, a nightmare to try and edit since most software is not used to 50p frame rates thus you have to keep the original files to preserve the quality and change the format of the file thus losing quality, i expect some software will eventually be out to sort this issue.

Its a 3MOS ( 2.53m pixels x 3 ) and it actually seems to shoot better still camera pictures than my Sony 8 megapixel carl zeiss lens camera, it also does 24fps and 10 bit colour but only at reduced 17mbp/s rates.

I have a sneaky suspicion it has some edge sharpening in the electronics though, footage shot against snow last year showed some haloes, maybe i just had it all set up wrong, i'm not a camera expert, maybe the haloes were something else as the online reviews all praise the cameras to the heavens but i wish i had bought the equivalent JVC model which has a softer, smoother more filmic image, and which all the reviews criticise as having a soft image, gee are people on these review sites blind or did i just have the camera setup wrong, oh well i'll get out on the bike into the countryside and shoot some stuff soon and see.

I need a polarizer filter though so i can get better colour, snow tended to go a little blue but that can be fixed by the polarizer which screws onto the lens.

Tell me if you can spot any haloes in the above vid. ?

Its funny as new models have superceded it but the price has shot up on Amazon by over £100 more, i guess low stock means they can charge more for a popular product.
