Word is it's cinematic predecessor, 2009's THE OFFSPRING, is a pile of poorly handled clusterf*ck. A shame, since as far as Jack Ketchum is concerned this is the final chapter in a trilogy going all the way back to the 1980 novel OFF SEASON.

Having literally watched this today, it's an incredible experience. Not a pleasant one, but still a rewarding meditation on exactly what makes us monsters - a surprising little inversion of The Hills Have Eyes that works immeasurably better than Craven's film ever dreamed of.

This was one of my most anticipated - and ultimately most disappointing films I saw at London's FrightFest in August. Not only did I find it lacking the power or originality I had been told it possessed but I actually found myself nodding off it was so predictably mediocre.

Nevertheless as someone who enjoyed Lucky Mckee's previous film MAY enormously I'd be lying if I said I wasn't going to give it a second try. Perhaps this could be film for the MOVIE MATTERS podcast, Michael?

I haven't been a fan of the previous Jack Ketchum adaptations I've seen (Red, The Girl Next Door, The Lost), but I thought this was very effective, without being anything groundbreaking.

The Blu-ray has at least one nice extra - the directors' Q&A from this year's FrightFest with Lucky McKee, Ti West and Larry Fessenden.
