#1107: Winnie the Pooh

10:29 PM / Blu-ray / Comments5 Comments

BD

(BD/DVD/digital copy combo, Buena Vista, Region ABC, USA)

Watched this earlier today. As I suspected would be the case, it's essentially harmless fluff - technically well-made and lovely to look at (the painterly backgrounds are particularly nice), but this transparent nostalgia piece shows just how creatively stagnant Disney animation has become in recent years. Come on, John Lasseter - greenlight something risky instead of chasing past glories with the likes of this and 90s throwbacks like THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG and TANGLED.

So are you saying that it was a load of pooh?

Not quite. It's much better than CARS 2, for example.

I was genuinely surprised by how much I loved this revival, and I especially couldn't get over how *funny* it is. This has admittedly been a pretty lousy year for comedies, but so many of the gags connected with me that Winnie the Pooh might be the funniest movie I've seen all year. Never thought I'd say that!

(I will agree that it's very slight, although I think I'd argue that winds up being one of the movie's greatest strengths.)

John Lassetter has turned out to be one of the biggest dampeners for Disney after being touted to save them from rot. Sequels and inoffensive (read dull-witted) family films seem to be all on the plate for now.

I recall reading about how a more radical script for Bolt from the people behind Lilo and Stitch was nixed by Lassetter to make a Pixar "unlikely hero finds himself" template rehash. Bolt had decent moments but on the whole it felt like a second rung Pixar film.
