Birthday swag

A good haul. And yes, I have succumbed to the dark side and become a Kindle owner. ;)

Happy birthday fella! The spine of THE THING BD looks different to my copy. Any chance of a glimpse at the artwork? More importantly I'll be very keen to hear your thoughts on the film (arguably my No1 John Carpenter film and I'm a BIG JC fan) and the image transfer. Having owned THE THING on VHS, DVD and now Blu-ray I can't praise it highly enough. It was honestly like seeing the film again for the first time - cleaned up print and lush blues with awesome sound. Enjoy buddy!

P.S - I'd love to cover some vintage Carpenter for Movie Matters podcast at some stage.

Happy birthday! Looks like a good haul for the year!

I've been faffing around with the idea of buying a Kindle for over a year. I rather like the idea of having hundreds of books in something so small.

Looks like the prequel version of The Thing.

Isn't the Carpenter version a casualty of Universal's DNR policy, the caps i have seen of the HD DVD edition look far better than the Blu ray.

In terms of picture quality, I've taken a brief look and I'll be honest (because that's what you expect from me, right?), what FoxyMulder says seems to be true. It strikes me as being up to (or rather down to) Universal's usual catalogue title standards. Of course I don't have any VHS or DVD versions to compare it against, and I'm sure next to them it looks impressive, but I wouldn't call this a good transfer by any means. That said, I'm still glad to have a copy of the film, so many thanks, and I expect I'll enjoy watching it just fine.

If it's any consolation, a couple of the discs in the Coen Brothers box set (also Universal) look absolutely hideous.

Happy birthday, Michael! I see Blue Velvet on that photo - great film!

Some classic Carpenter on Movie Matters sounds like a good idea.

Here is a good comparison of how The Thing could have looked on Blu ray if Universal had laid off the noise reduction.

I think they did an automated scratch removal with Blu ray edition of The Thing too as you can see some things disappear in a couple of those caps.

Oh and hey i hope you had a nice birthday.

Happy (belated) Birthday
Its a shame that Universal seem intent on releasing most of their catalog titles with plenty of DNR. I bought The Big Lebowski digibook only to be disappointed by the disc. I think I'll eventually order the Italian disc (Il Grande Lebowski) which is closer to the HD-DVD release of the film and swap the disc into the digibook.

If curious of the difference, caps-a-holic did a comparison. You have the choice of the 3 discs;
