As with Tarantino’s THE HATEFUL EIGHT, I think it’s curious that Branagh and co went to the expense of shooting what is effectively a chamber piece on 65mm, but there’s no denying that the results look great. This is a good example of a title where the 1080p Blu-ray downconversion really doesn’t do the film justice, even making it look slightly digital at times: the format simply can’t resolve the medium’s texture to anything approaching its full extent. In contrast, the 4K Ultra HD disc is a thing of beauty, with superb detail and a light but visible sheen of grain. As for the film itself, I’m not convinced Branagh’s efforts to render the uncinematic cinematic are entirely successful (ditto the obviously CGI shots of the train making its way through the countryside), and the efforts to give Poirot a more three-dimensional character journey feel a little forced, but I enjoyed the film overall and it definitely held up to a repeat viewing.
And the jury’s still out on the ‘tache.
